Antibodies are Y-shaped proteins and the antigen-binding region is located on top of the two arms and defined as paratop (Fig 1). They can be produced against a wide variety of substances. The antibody fragment (Fab), has the antigen binding site called the paratope, the lower part of the antibody consists of the crystallizable fragment (Fc), which binds to specific receptors to communicate with other components of the immune system. The differences in the Fc regions give rise to five antibody classes: IgM, IgG, IgA, IgD and IgE. The structure of all antibodies consists of two heavy (H) and two light (L) polypeptide chains that have an NH2 terminal variable domain (V) and a COOH-constant domain (C). The chains are linked with disulfide bridges as shown in Fig. 1 to maintain stability.
